The SLCJ is equipped with facilities to teach both mainstream (Print and Electronic) and digital journalism, and is today, the premier institute of its kind in Sri Lanka as it is run in close collaboration with industry partners. The college has a faculty of experienced media/journalism trainers and draws on a pool of lecturers who are from the Academic and practitioners from the newsrooms.

The three main programs of the college are:

  • a one year full time Diploma in Journalism,
  • mid-career courses for journalists already working in the industry
  • regular regional courses for provincial correspondents.

The SLCJ is administered by the Sri Lanka Press Institute, constituted by the Newspaper Society of Sri Lanka, The Editors Guild of Sri Lanka, the Free Media Movement and the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association.

In all the courses conducted by the SLCJ, there is a strong émphasis on ethics based on the Editors’ Code of Professional Practice and other relevant Industry standards.
